Zone 2 - Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
Zone 3 - Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
Zone 4 - Indian Institute of Technology ,Guwahati
Zone 5 - Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Zone 6 - Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Zone 7 - Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Zone 8 - Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

The overall coordination and responsibility lies with any one of the seven IITs or IISc Banglore. The GATE Committee is the sole authority for regulating the examination and declaring results.


GATE Qualification :

Admission to the Postgraduate Programmes, with MHRD and other government scholarship / assistantship, in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy / Science at engineering colleges / institutes in the country will be open only to those who qualify through GATE.

Some engineering colleges/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes.

However, GATE qualification by itself does not guarantee either admission or scholarship/assistantship.

Candidates are required to find out the procedure of final selection and award of Scholarship/Assistantship from the institutions in which they seek admission.

Eligibility :

The following categories of candidates are eligible to take GATE : 
(a) Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes. 

(b) Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes. 

(c) Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master’s degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering / Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology. 

(d) Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognised by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.



Candidates will be required to appear in a single paper of three hours duration. The examination will be held from 09:30 a.m to 12:30 noon. on Second Sunday of February. The question paper is in English only.

Before applying for GATE, candidates must assure themselves that they have chosen the right paper, which qualifies them to become eligible to seek admission to the specific programme they are interested in. The criteria for postgraduate admission with Scholarship / Assistantship are different in various Institutes. GATE Offices are not in a position to provide any information in this regard. For details, the candidates are required to contact the Institutes/Universities to which they are interested in seeking admission.


GATE Structure :

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration and of 150 marks.

GATE has the following 21 papers:

Papers XE and XL are of general nature and will comprise the following Sections:

Engineering Sciences (XE):                                  Life Sciences (XL):

Candidates appearing in XE or XL papers are required to answer three sections.

Sections (A) and (H) are compulsory in XE and XL respectively. Candidates can choose any two out of the remaining sections mentioned against the respective papers.

The choice of the appropriate paper is the responsibility of the candidate.


However, some guidelines are suggested below:


(a) Candidates are expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree.

(b) However, the candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admission plan,keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the admitting institute.
