The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was established way back in 1951, is the first among the seven IITs in India . In 1946 prior to India’s independence, the concept of establishing a chain of technical institutes on the lines of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA in order to usher in post -war development in India, came up. This concept reached fructification in the shape of IIT Kharagpur. Beginning in a rather humble way in a dilapidated building, IIT Kharagpur has indeed come a long way and made key contributions to the scientific, technical and industrial development of India .
