ADMISSION TO FIVE YEAR INTEGRATED MASTERS PROGRAMME

IIT Madras
has invited application for their unique and innovative Five Year Integrated Masters Programme, leading to MA degrees in three disciplines, viz., Development Studies, Economics and English Studies. The distinctive feature of this programme is that it allows students to choose their disciplines after getting a wide exposure to the field of humanities and social sciences. During the first two years of the programme, students will be introduced to a variety of common subjects related to all the three major disciplines offered from the third year.
These common subjects are meant both to develop students' appreciation of the multi-disciplinary nature of fundamental concepts in humanities and social sciences and to enable them in choosing their professional disciplines.

Another feature of the programme is the involvement of the Engineering, Sciences and Management faculties in offering innovative courses in collaboration with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Admission to this course is solely through Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE). The programme has a total of 30 seats in all the three disciplines put together. Each discipline will have a total of 10 seats. Allocation of seats to individual disciplines will be made at the end of the third semester, based on the student's preference, performance (CGPA over the first three semesters) and availability of seats under each discipline.


HSEE 2008 will be held on 18th May 2008, Sunday, 10 am to 1 pm. Applications will be on sale till March 3. Application costing Rs.600/-(Rs.300 for SC/ST/Female candidates) will be available at Canara Bank, IIT Madras by cash. To obtain the form by post, candidates can write to the Chairman, HSEE JEE Office, IIT Madras, Chennai-36, with the draft and two self address slips.


SYLLABUS FOR HSEE-2008

English (25% marks): This section tests the candidate's ability to understand and use grammatically acceptable Englsih, to understand the nuances of language and also appreciate literary language. There will be also questions related areas like reading skills, comprehension skills, literary competence, grammar and vocabulary.

Analytical and Quantitative Ability (25% marks): Numbers, Alegra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Calendar, Basic Statistics, Percentages, Simple and Copound Interest, Work and time, Discount, Age sums, linerar equations, elementary trigonometry Data Interpretation, Analytical Resoning, Logical Resoning, brainteasers, patters.

General Studies (in four parts-50% marks): This section will contain Indian economics in detail, planning in India, foreign trade and international economy. Indian Society: Contains structure of Indian society, history and making of Indian society, reform movements in the 19th century, independence and the emergence of India and Indian philosophy and Indian thinkers.
Contemporary World Affairs Post-World War II): This part of the examination will test the candidates' awareness of the contemporary world that the live in. Issues relating to history, polity, society and culture since 1945 will be covered in this section.

The syllabus also covers literature and art, developments in IT, weather and climate, natural disasters, population growth, degradation of soils, global atmosphere changes, global warming, international treaties and solar and other renewable energy.
