Introduction to Engineering Career
An
Evergreen Career
The growth of commerce and technology has thrown open lots of jobs in India and
outside for competent engineers. Over the past few years recruitment of
engineers by MNCs both IT and Manufacturing has increased with increased
salaries. The career scope depends on the Institute that the student studied
from and the branch of engineering. The objective of this booklet is to help you
understand these issues better.
Branches in Engineering
1.Agriculture
Engineering
Principles of engineering and technology related to production, Processing,
transportation and storage of agricultural commodities. Opportunities are
available in Central and state Government Departments of agriculture and
agriculture engineering, agro-industries and minor irrigation corporations ,
watershed management and command area development projects , agriculture
machinery manufacturing organizations , tea gardens, FCI, ICAR, CSIR
etc.
2.Aerospace
Engineering
The aerospace engineer deals with the design, analysis, construction, testing
and operation of aircraft. The course is offered at IIT Chennai, Mumbai,
Kanpur and Kharagpur. Admission for all these courses is through IIT-JEE
conducted by IITs
3.Aeronautical Engineering
This is about maintenance of aircraft. Students who have passed class XII with
physics and Maths can enroll for a three-year program. There are lots of
institutes offering this program.
4.Biochemical
Engineering and Biotechnology
Opportunities are available in R & D, academia, process industries and
in particular, management of a large range of industries such as pharmaceutical
drug fermentation and production of high value chemicals.
5.Ceramic
Engineering
Industries producing refractories, iron steel, glass, cement, porcelain, enamels
and special ceramic and also several R & D labs and Defence establishments
offer employment.
6.Chemical
Engineering
This deals with Petroleum refining, fertilizer technology, processing of food
and agriculture products, synthetic food, petrochemicals, synthetic fibres, coal
and mineral based industries and prevention and control of environmental
pollution. Lot of opportunities exist for chemical engineers both in public and
private sectors in the design, development, fabrication, production and control
of chemical and processing plants.
7.Civil
Engineering
A civil engineer is concerned with the creation of constructed facilities .The
skills involve planning, analysis, design, construction and maintenance of a
variety of facilities such as buildings, highway and rail-roads, water-ways and
canals, dams and power houses, water treatment and sewage disposal system, docks
and harbours, bridges and tunnels.
8.Computer Science Engineering
Design and construction of computers and development of computer programmes and
computer based information and control systems. Career opportunities are
available in computer system design and manufacturing industries, management
services and data processing departments of modern industries, management
consultancy originations which develop computer programmes for industries and
export software, organization developing system models and application
programmer for computer controlled systems in petroleum and chemical industry,
etc. are available.
9. Electrical, Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering
Broad disciplines are electrical power engineering and electronics engineering.
The former is concerned with the generation, distribution and use of electrical
power and power control and instrumentation applications. The latter deals with
the application of electronics in the processing of the formation in the fields
of communication and control system, electronic computers, industrial
electronics and instrumentation.
10.Energy Engineering
This deals with energy issues and other related problems. Employment in
industries and organizations concerned with the design, development and
manufacture of equipment for economic and optimal exploitation of current energy
technology, energy planning and management and technology transfer is offered to
the energy engineer.
11.Industrial Engineering
Deals with design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of men ,
materials, machines, energy and information.
12.Instrumentation Engineering
This deals with Design, construction and maintenance of instrumentation and
instrumentation systems. Employment is available in industries such as steel
plants, fertilizer units, refineries, power stations, research & development
units of Defence and Government of India establishments.
13.Manufacturing Science & Engineering
These deals with integrated design and efficient planning of the entire
manufacturing system, which is becoming increasingly complex with the emergence
of sophisticated, production methods and control systems. Jobs are available in
public and private sector manufacturing organizations engaged in implementation,
development and management of new production Process, etc.
14.Marine Engineering
Admission for all these courses is through IIT-JEE conducted by IITs. The
students will have to appear for the test after 12th and also apply
simultaneously to IMS (Indian Maritime Studies). The applications have to be
sent during January march every year. The forms could be bought at syndicate
bank.
There are also lot of private engineering institutes, which train students
for Marine engineering and Merchant Navy.
15.Mech. Engineering
Deals with design, operation and maintenance of machines and their components,
mechanisms, machine tools, manufacturing systems and processes, components of
thermal power system including internal combustion engines and turbo machinery,
solar energy, heat transfer, air conditioning, refrigeration and industrial
engineering.
16.Metallurgical Engineering
Opportunities exist in steel plants for extracting and processing of
nonferrous metals and metallurgical industries such as foundries, heat treatment
shops, rolling mills, etc.
17.Mining Engineering
This deals with planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of
mines, their safety and excavation and transport of minerals. Both the private
and public sectors of the mining industry offer a wide range of opportunities to
mining engineers.
18.Physics Engineering
This deals with theoretical and experimental aspects of modern physics, with an
orientation towards some of the skills useful in technological applications. In
addition to several core courses in phy, special topics are covered by electives
such as solid sate electronics, cryogenics, material science, laser technology
and applied nuclear science.
19.Textile Technology
A textile technology is primarily concerned with textile fibres and their
transformation into yarns and fabrics.
Three options (a) Textile Technology
(b) Textile Engineering, (c) Textile Chem,
are available. Jobs are available in the public and private sectors in the
textile industry.
5 Yr Master of
Engineering Management (MEM) Programme
The five-year integrated Master of Engineering Management (MEM) programme is
aimed at producting engineering managers who possess wholistic understanding of
the technological and management process and the associated problems. The MEM
Programme is open for all who join B.Tech. Programmes at IIT Kanpur.
