NEWS : 3.2 lakh candidates appear for IIT-JEE

This year witnessed a rise of around 70,000 students appearing for the IIT-JEE entrance test. While the number had declined last year due to restriction of attempts, it has again gone up. However, the pattern of the paper remained unchanged..

AMIDST MUCH brouhaha over the implementation of OBC quota in higher educational institutions including the IITs, around 3.2 lakh candidates took the joint entrance exam popularly known as the JEE across the country. While last year the number of candidates had decreased due to the rule that laid down maximum no of attempts as two only, this year the numbers have again shot up.

Around 70, 000 more candidates are taking a shot on April 13 (Sunday) at the entrance exam as compared to last year.   There has been no change in the pattern of the test and IIT aspirants will take two papers as last year. Both the papers have objective questions from physics, chemistry and mathematics. The test is being conducted in seven zones across the country for admission into the prestigious

IITs at Kharagpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee.
Presently, the IITs have around six thousand engineering seats in the seven institutes and they are supposed to increase the number of seats to accommodate the reservation quota proposed by the UPA government.

It is to be noted that compared to the JEE, the number of candidates for the CBSE’s pre-medical test (PMT), which was held on last Sunday witnessed a steep decline in the number of candidates.   Experts opine that the fall in the number for medical aspirants is a clear indication that medicine as a profession is losing charm with the youngsters.
