(News) Fee hike fails to deter IIT aspirants
Fee hike fails to deter IIT aspirants :
The
proposal of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to double the tuition fee
has hardly deterred the aspirants.
Shafquat Ali, daughter of an autorickshaw driver, is an IIT aspirant and is
determined to crack the entrance test. It doesn't matter to her that she hails
from poor families. She shrugs off the fee hike.
''I told my father that the fee has been hiked. He was concerned, but first
thing is that I have to qualify and after that God is going to help me,''
believes Shafquat.
Many poor students come to Anand Kumar's institute. Anand, along with
Abhayanand, a senior police officer, guide 30 selected students free of cost.
In the last five years, 122 of their ''Super Thirty'' students have made it to
IITs.
'Those who have talent and qualify, are followed by the banks. The banks invites
them to come and take the loan,'' says Anand.
''When they pass out from IIT, they will be getting as much of a package as
anybody else. At that level, therefore, I don't think there is any need to panic
on this ground,'' says Abhayanand, Additional Director General of Bihar Police,
who teaches physics to the ''super thirties''.
However, not everyone is so sure about bank loans.
''If I seek bank's help, they raise many issues like guarantees, land-house for
surety. I won't be able to educate her, says Devashis Goon, father of an IIT
aspirant.
Though unaffordable for most, the steep fee hike is a distant bother for the IIT
aspirants from modest economic backgrounds. They would rather cross the bridge
when they come to it. For now, they are banking on their intelligence and
perseverance to clear the entrance exam.
However, once they qualify, most will be banking on the banks to finance their
IIT dream.
