IIT Education Gets Online

There is good news for the ones aspiring for an IIT education.

Now you don't even have to leave your home or give any entrance exams for it as you can access some of it at least, anywhere in the world for free.

On the lines of the prestigious MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), IIT Bombay is going to web cast 5 of its courses.

But its not only some 50 odd students who are gaining from it. The lecture can now accessed by anyone, anywhere in the world for free.

All you need is an Internet connection and of course you have to be in front of your computer at the time of the lecture and that too for a tiny fee.

IIT will ensure that you can access it anytime. In its 50th year, it's a part of IIT Bombay's initiative that aims to benefit thousands of students and working professionals from some of the best engineering teachers in the country.

''The beneficiaries are students who need such a course but it may not be available in the college they are studying. Imagine someone who has come home from work at 6 pm and having to go to college again. Now he can just sit at home and take it,'' said Prof Kannan Moudgulya, Powai.

Initially, only five subjects like power electronics, artificial intelligence, Nano electronics will be beamed live on the net.

The only hitch is that at the end of the course IIT will not evaluate your performance or award a certificate for taking the course.

So how do the intended beneficiaries then rate the initiative?

We spoke with some professionals from Tech Mahindra who recently took the IIT Bombay's courses via satellite.

''The advantages are that you can access anytime and learn anytime but if somebody needs some IIT stamp, then that is not happening,'' said S Chattaraj, Software Professional.

Iravati Deshmukh, also a Software Professional said, ''To do a course from IIT is a dream for many engineers but it's become rare because of the competition and the cost factor and it adds value to my resume.''

And finally that is the bottom line that matters.
