News : IIT-JEE pattern change springs a surprise

The IIT Joint Entrance Examination on Sunday offered a number of surprises with change in the question pattern as nearly four lakh students appeared in the test for admission into the prestigious institutes.

The number of questions came down from 132 last year to 120 in both the papers. However, the number of subjective type questions was more than last year.

“There were more subjective type questions which created problem. Such questions consume more time,” Ansal Basu, a candidate, said.

However, the paper carried 60 questions each this time, six each less from last year. “The questions were answerable,” he said.

Among all the sections, Mathematics was tough as usual. “Mathematics portion was bit difficult than Physics and Chemistry. The pattern of questions in Mathematics was different this year also,” Bharat Agrawal, another student, said.

Prof Gautam Baruah, Director of IIT Guwahati which is conducting IIT-JEE this year, said that such changes in the question pattern is a usual phenomenon.

Students qualifying the test will be eligible for admission into 15 IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad which will offer nearly 6,000 seats this year.

With an overall increase in the number of seats in IITs due to implementation of OBC quota and opening of the new IITs, the number of aspirants for the prestigious institutes went up by nearly 80,000 this year. Last year, about 3.2 lakh candidates had appeared in the test.

About 63,000 students sat for the test in Delhi region and the exam was conducted at 137 centres in the region, IIT Delhi Director Prof. Surendra Prasad said. PTI
