IIT-Kanpur To Soon Launch Course In Railway Engineering

Some of India’s premier institutions of engineering and management will now help the Indian Railways boost its operations.Perhaps for the first time, the Indian Railways will start a full-time course in Railway Engineering at IIT-Kanpur.

Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of the Indian Railways has tied up with IIT-Kanpur to start a Masters Degree (MTech) programme in Railway Engineering from the coming session,” said K C Jena, Railway Board Chairman, at a press conference in Varanasi on Sunday.

According a Railway official: “With this, the Railways will have full-fledged railway engineers taught and trained by the best engineering minds of the country.”

Currently, the Indian Railway sources its engineering manpower requirements from its six centralised training institutes, including the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) in Jamalpur.

Jena, the former Principal Secretary of Central Government, added that four railway chairs have been instituted at IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Roorkee, IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Bangalore. “The chairs will speed up research activities at the institutes in areas of specific importance to the railways,” he said.

When asked about the a perennial problem of passenger trains being delayed, Jena said, “Only a dedicated freight corridor, which is under construction, will solve the problem. The problem becomes more serious during extreme weather conditions. A committed freight corridor will totally shift the goods train traffic to the other track, leaving the previous network solely for passenger trains.”

Jena also said the RDSO was working on a technology which will eliminate chances of rail bogies and wagons climbing atop each other, caused by coupling failure.

On the issue of security at railway stations, he said although it comes under jurisdiction of the State Railway Police (Government Railway Police), “we are coordinating with state governments for law and order maintenance and security at stations, especially in wake of incidents like last year’s stampede at the Mughalsarai railway station.”
