IIT-Kgp to set up 'entrepreneurship school'

Kolkata: In order to provide appropriate knowledge and skills to the aspiring entrepreneurs, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) has come up with a plan to set up a separate 'school of entrepreneurship' in the recent future.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Director of IIT Kharagpur D. Acharya said, "The IIT authorities had been planning to set up a separate school of entrepreneurship since past few years. Now the dream would become a reality."

"Initially the school would admit about 30 students for the five-year course. The course will target students from financially secure backgrounds who are not looking for jobs. It was meant for potential employment generators who could accelerate the process of development and not employment seekers," he added.

As per the plan, students desirous of taking admission to the entrepreneurship course will have to clear the regular IIT-JEE. In this case they will be awarded two degrees - a Bachelor of Technology and a Master of Entrepreneurship - at the completion of the course.

The most interesting fact is that half of the cost of introducing the course would be borne by an alumnus of the institute Mr. Vinod Mehta.

Among other developmental plans the institute has made a target of doubling the student intake capacity from 7,000 within the next five years. The institute is thus investing Rs.396 crore for infrastructural development to achieve the target.
