Lectures by Noble Laureates at IIT-B
As a part of its ongoing Golden Jubilee
celebrations Distinguish Lecture Series, Indian Institute of Technology
Bombay (IIT Bombay) will be: hosting two Noble Laureate scientists -
Prof Carlo Rubbia, Department of Physics, University of Pavia, Italy and, Prof
Sherwood Rowland, Department of Chemistry University of California at the IIT
campus.
In 1984 Prof Carlo Rubbia shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Simon van der
Meer for direct observation of new kind of photons, the W and Z, the
intermediaries of the Weak nuclear force. This was a confirmation of the theory
of S. Glashow, A. Salam and S. Weinberg who received the Nobel Prize for the
same in 1979.
Prof Sherwood received the Noble prize in 1974 along Prof Mario Molian for their
discovery about chlorofluorocarbons which depleted the ozone layer, thereby
permitting more (biologically harmful) ultraviolet rays to reach the earth. It
was because of their research that the Montreal Protocol treaty was initiated to
protect Ozone layer from substances that deplete it.
Prof Carlo Rubbia, will be delivering a public lecture titled "Which energy
for the future?" on 9th February, 2008 at 5.00 to 6.00 pm and Prof Sherwood
Rowland will be delivering a public lecture on Stratospheric Ozone Depletion by
Chlorofluorocarbons on 11th February, 2008 at 4.00 to 5.30 pm at PC Saxena Hall
at IIT Bombay, Powa.
