UNESCO’s Special IIT Status
The
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco)
conferred a special designation to the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
(IIT-B) for creating a knowledge-based society and for its rich knowledge
heritage.
The association of IIT-B and Unesco goes
back to 1958 when the latter extended its cooperation in setting up the
50-year-old institute at Powai. And on Wednesday, IIT-B received the
‘Knowledge Heritage Center’ status from the Unesco’s New Delhi office. The
designation endorses and reinforces the Institute’s international standing as
a world-class research center.
“IIT-B was originally established with the cooperation and participation of
Unesco,” said Minja Yang, Unesco Director. “Over the past 50 years, it has
grown in stature as an institution of national importance and a leader in higher
education, research and training. Unesco is delighted to renew and strengthen
its partnership with IIT-B.”
IIT-B Director, Professor Ashok Mishra pointed out that both IIT-B
and Unesco work through academic and research collaborations with national and
international universities, governments and industries to meet the needs of
society.
Established in 1948, Unesco’s New Delhi office operates programmes to
strengthen science and technology, including ecological and earth sciences, for
sustainable development.
Unesco and IIT-B also signed an agreement to “strengthen
knowledge and innovation with a special focus on supporting sustained and
inclusive growth in Indian society”. This means, both the organizations will
promote traditional technology and renewable energy for sustainable development,
which is crucial for India. Under the agreement, IIT-B will contribute a
revolving fund of Rs 10 lakh for various joint activities.
